چکیده

The advantages of clonal forestry have been well described, but little progress has made in the identification phenotypes best suited to this method high-value hardwood species. genetic variation within, repeatability (broad-sense heritability) of, and Pearson's correlations among phenological, morphological, physiological, growth traits (N = 22) black walnut (Juglans nigra L.) were investigated using 25 grafted genotypes. trees grown at wide spacing (4.6 m × 6.1 m) an intensively managed plantation north-central Indiana, USA. Clonal effect was significant (p < 0.05) for most except gas exchange variables. Many phenological showed high (Rc2 > 0.70), including foliation dates, first female bloom, pollen shed, crown retention rate (autumnal defoliation). Some moderate (0.35 Rc2 0.7), such as branch angle, frequency, tree diameter, height, anthracnose severity, foliar carbon nitrogen concentration. Net CO2 assimilation stomatal conductance had low 0.35). We observed a previously unreported association between sexual morph stem growth, i.e., protandrous generally grew faster than protogynous trees. This may be evolutionary consequence differences reproductive costs versus trees, needs tested other monoecious woody Overall, our analyses indicated that following are associated with rapid growth: 1) early foliation; 2) male flowering or late flowering, more likely variety; 3) large average diameter; 4) frequency; 5) small (more vertical) angle; 6) leaf fall; 7) later-season concentration; 8) number fruits seeds. These used, further testing, define biomass ideotype J. nigra.

Effects of Seedling Type on the Establishment, Growth and Precocity of Eastern Black Walnuts (Juglans nigra L.) for Nut Production

Eastern black walnut (Juglans nigra L.) has potential for agroforestry practices in the eastern United States because of its value for nuts and timber; however, practices for optimum nut production are poorly defined. Studies were conducted to determine the type of planting material that can assure successful establishment of black walnut for nut production. The first study compared the surviva...

Use of NMR spectroscopy and magnetic resonance imaging for di~riminating Juglans nigra L. seeds

Black walnut (Jug/am nigra L.) seeds are large and require stratification for germination. However, many seeds fail to germinate following stratification. Radiography can be used to select empty seeds, but cannot determine which full seeds will germinate. The objective of this study was to determine if any discrimination could bc achieved through use of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectros...

Application of Embryo Rescue Technique in Juglans regia L. x J. nigra L. Hybridization

Embryo culture were used to produce inter specific walnut hybrid plants between Juglans nigra L. and J. regia L. Developed ovaries were collected from J. rejia female flowers which were pollinated with J. nigra pollen grain by high dusting on a mature tree. In order to isolate embryos, exocarps were aseptically removed. Isolated embryos from ovules at different developmental stages were transfe...

Physicochemical Properties of Black Walnut (Juglans nigra L.) in the Western Mid-hills of Nepal

The black walnut (Juglans nigra L.) is an underutilized fruit in the mid-hills of Nepal. However, the physico-chemical properties of Nepalese black walnut are almost unavailable in the literature. Four walnut growing districts namely Baitadi, Dadeldhura, Jumla and East Rukum selected and the black walnut collected at commercial maturity from the local markets. The physical properties w...

The presence or absence of active infection, not clinical status, is most closely associated with cytokine responses in lymphatic filariasis.

Twenty-eight Brazilians from an area in which Wuchereria bancrofti is endemic were classified as asymptomatic microfilaremic or having clinical filariasis with active infection or without current active infection. Total accumulation of antigen-specific interleukin (IL)-4 and IL-5 in 48 h peripheral blood mononuclear cell supernatants was not significantly different between groups. However, when...
